Summary for March 12

Dave Barber from MIT's Security and Emergency Management joined us on the show. He has been at MIT for over 20 years now, and worked in safety -> EHS -> SEM. Some of the things we talked about were

- The MIT Hack Removal Squad aka Hackbusters
- Dave's favorite hack: when they changed the Lobby 7 inscription in the 90's and he got to rappel down in order to remove it.
- Having tea on the Great Dome
- Steer Roast at Senior Haus
- Rush, 40 ft towers, rollercoasters, water slides, ziplines, etc. at East Campus
- The Caltech Cannon
- Emergency response models at MIT, stories from disaster simulations
- The current hacking climate at MIT and finding a medium between the two extreme stances on hacking

This was the first show of the season. The guest, Dave Kennedy, talked about
- The Office of Student Citizenship
- His career path from being a Philosophy and English major, to Law School, starting his own law firm, being a high school mathematics teacher, to coming to MIT.
- His experience being a DJ on a late night show
- He works as a mediator for pretty much all student related departments at MIT and advises the COD (Committee on Discipline)
- He talked about his yin-yang tatoos on his forearms
- MIT's protocol for handling copyright issues with illegal downloading
- Offense 1: Takedown notice from IST
- Offense 2: Letter from Dave's office
- Offense 3: COD
- Issues with hacking
- Illegal is illegal
- MIT tries to be consistent wherever it can
- Hacking related cases are reviewed on a case by case basis, i.e there is no single blanket consequence or rule
- MIT budget cuts
